Students and teachers at Ormiston Horizon Academy (OHA) are celebrating after receiving a brilliant Ofsted report – with the Academy once again rated ‘Good’.
Inspectors described the academy’s Principal, Rod Hughes’ “unswerving determination to ensure the academy’s success” and to provide “the best possible education for pupils”.
The report also praised the Principal for his “relentless work to establish a culture of high aspirations and achievement for all” and noted how the “effective” senior leadership team support this vision with “a strong sense of purpose and direction across the school”.
The glowing report highlighted the strong focus on providing students with enrichment activities, which promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development “very effectively”. Inspectors noted that the academy endeavours to provide “something for everyone” and encourages all students to get involved.
The report also notes how the academy benefits from the support of its sponsor, Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), with the academy’s leaders “actively involved in the multi-academy trust mutual support network”. The inspectors noted how they are, “making the most of the opportunities this network offers in terms of staff professional development and sharing of effective best practice.”
The Academy was rated ‘Good’ for effectiveness of leadership and management, outcomes for pupils, quality of teaching, learning and assessment and personal development, behaviour and welfare. The report also says that despite “the efforts of leaders and continued support of governors”, the school’s sixth form no longer has the number of learners required for it to be viable, with the high number of sixth-form places available in the area, and will therefore close in September 2019. All current students will continue at the sixth form to the end of their programmes of study. This follows a consultation of parents, staff, students and the wider community.
The academy in Tunstall, opened in 2011 under the sponsorship of (OAT) and in its first Ofsted inspection, in July 2014, was rated ‘Good’ in all categories.
This latest inspection once again confirms the success of the academy, which continues to be on a strong upward trajectory. Ofsted noted how the academy has grown rapidly since the last inspection in 2014, increasing its intake from 599 to 983 students, reflecting its remarkable turnaround.
The report highlights a number of other key areas:
