On Friday 8th February, it was our second ‘Speaking and Listening Development (SALAD) Day’ of this academic year. Our literacy focus was embedding our ‘Oracy Non-Negotiables’: 1. Speak in full sentences; 2. Use formal language; 3. Use academic, subject-specific language. Students partook in a plethora of speaking and listening activities in their lessons in all different subjects. Personal tutors also delivered a PowerPoint in personal tutor time whereby students watched a clip from ‘Educating Yorkshire’ and discussed the benefits and drawbacks of producing a documentary of this nature. It was a truly enjoyable day for students and staff alike and it was very clear that our students have made significant progress in their speaking and listening skills this academic year as a result of our heightened focus on oracy as an academy. We are thoroughly looking forward to our next SALAD Day which takes place in July.
