On Thursday 1st March, we celebrated World Book Day here at Ormiston Horizon Academy. This year’s theme was ‘Horizon’s Literary Heroes & Villains’. To celebrate this fantastic literary event, the following initiatives were undertaken: Miss Gardner, Director of Literacy, led World Book Day assemblies all week; staff came in fancy dress as literary heroes or villains; teachers read out extracts from ‘The Landlady’ by Roald Dahl at the beginning of each lesson which students had to answer questions about; there were various activities going on in the Library led by our librarian, Mrs Porter-Nash, including a character quiz and word searches; Mr Whittle and the catering team provided delicious dishes in theme of the day, such as ‘Harry Potter’s Magical Muffins’ and ‘Frankenstein’s Monster’s Minty Puds’; we had an external storyteller from WISE Moves (Swati Sharples) who came into the academy to deliver workshops to Y7 & Y8 classes telling exciting Indian myths; the English department delivered lessons in theme of the day in which KS3 students had to describe a villain; personal tutors also delivered a WBD PowerPoint promoting the occasion and gave out WBD tokens; the PE department also got into the spirit of the day by hosting an interhouse challenge in which the houses competed against each other as heroes or villains. Overall, it was a highly successful day which was enjoyed by both students and staff and we look forward to celebrating World Book Day again next year!
