Aspirations Academy


The Aspirations Academy: creating outstanding enrichment opportunities for the more able.


In September 2015, Ormiston Horizon Academy launched their Aspirations Academy in order to offer support for ambitious more able students with high aspirations.

The Aspirations Academy supports all students who aspire to university, in particular one of the leading Russell Group institutions. As an academy we have close links with both local and national universities, including Keele and Oxford University, where visits are arranged to give students an authentic academic experience.

Some of the opportunities available to Aspirations Academy students are listed below:

  • Oxford University- Year 11 taster visits to Keble College
  • UNIVERSIFY Residential Courses -a summer residential at Somerville College, Oxford University
  • Sutton Trust Summer schools- for Year 12 students at a number of Russell Group universities
  • Debate mate- training in debating and public speaking skills with a final held at the Oxford Union, Oxford University
  • The Brilliant Club – Year 9 students work with a PHD tutor as part of the Scholars Programme
  • Leeds University – Year 9 students
  • Manchester University- Year 9 students
  • Keele Medpath – Year 10 students visit Keele University’s school of medicine.
  • Steps to Medicine – an introduction to studying medicine for Year 8
  • Brightside Mentoring- Year 12 students have access to online mentoring
  • Keele and Staffs University summer residential for Year 12 students
  • Youth Parliament
  • Student Council
  • Newsletter team- developing journalistic skills

The programme of study also includes opportunities for KS3 students to work with OHA6 students to develop independent learning skills. Additionally there are master classes during period 6 to stretch and challenge learning in subjects ranging from maths to Art.

Students are also given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and participate in a wide range of extra- curricular activities to give them the competitive edge in their personal statement when it comes to applying for university.
